On April 28th and 29th, 2006, 94 gifted young pianists competed for
scholarship awards through The 5th Annual Steinway Piano
Competition- the largest piano competition in Southwest
Florida, co-sponsored for the first time by Florida Gulf
Coast University. The winners of the competition were given
cash scholarships totaling over $11,000 funded by
contributions from of the Steinway Piano Society. The
winning students were also granted two more performance
opportunities, and will be featured in a WGCU television
program.

On Sunday, April 30th, 2006, three finalists from each of the four
age categories performed in a recital and awards
presentation at the WGCU TV Studio, our local PBS
affiliate. Scholarship awards were presented after the
children performed. The event was hosted by Scott Houston,
The Piano Guy. WGCU will also spend the summer shooting
background material on the kids, their families and
teachers- all to be compiled into a one hour program that
will air over the holidays. It is expected that many other
PBS stations throughout Florida will air the program as
well.
The competition was divided into four categories: Early
Elementary (Grades K-3), Late Elementary (Grades 4-5),
Junior (Grades 6-9), and Senior (Grades 10-12).
