Steinway Piano Society Scholarship Student – First Prize Winner of International Piano Competition
Bonita Springs, August 10, 2011 - Priscila Navarro, a seventeen year old sophomore at FGCU’s Bower School of Music, took first prize at the International Piano Competition in her native Lima, Peru on July 25. A piano performance major who studies with Dr. Michael Baron, Head of Keyboard Studies at the Bower School of Music, she was chosen last fall as the Steinway Piano Society’s third scholarship recipient.
The ceremony was held at the auditorium of the Centro Cultural de Petroperu and members of the jury chaired by Alexandre Lustchevsky Raphael, professor at Chopin Music University Warsaw, and representatives of the Polish Embassy and the National Conservatory of Music were in attendance. Navarro’s award includes an all-expenses paid trip to study Chopin at the Warsaw Conservatory in Poland for two weeks.
Last year, she won the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Senior Competition for the State of Florida; the MTNA Piano Duet Competition for the State of Florida; the Regional Senior MTNA Competition, in which the winners of nine states compete against each other; and the Regional Piano Duet MTNA Division Competition. She was also a winner of the Ars Flores National Concerto Competition in Fort Lauderdale. We are very proud of Ms. Navarro, and gratified to support such talented, hard-working students" said Greg Billings, founder of the Steinway Piano Society. Steinway Piano Society’s previous scholarship recipient, Hyae-Jin Hwang, is now in graduate school at the University of Michigan under a full fellowship.
